Such a Cute Little Boy

While I'm still in a mellow mood, I think I'll say a few words about Michael Jackson. From all the media attention he has gotten all of his life, especially his adult life, he could have stood a little mellowness and kindness from somewhere.

When Michael was five, he was just as cute as a bug in a rug. My kids were fans of his. I could stand to listen to him, one of the few rock "artists" I could stand without wanting to shove a pencil into my ear.

Then, he began to grow up and grow weird. At first, he just seemed quirky. Neverland seemed to be a poignant attempt to experience the childhood he never had. Then, it all fell apart. What a nightmare! Young boys and their greedy parents lined up to accuse him of being a pedophile. The media couldn't get enough of the stories, the more lascivious the better. Michael was tried and acquitted of the charges in court, but found guilty by the media.

So, here's where I mellow out. After being married to a lawyer for many years, I believe in the judicial system, O.J. Simpson's jury notwithstanding. So, I believe in the possibility that was truly not guilty - emphasis on the word "possibility". We'll never know, now.

Still, I feel that Michael's life was a trajedy. It's hard to pinpoint where things started spiraling downward, but the worse things got, the more I believed that things could not end well for him. Whenever I saw him in interviews, I became convinced that he was an example of arrested development. It became obvious that he needed someone who would tell him "no", occasionally, and tell him that some of the things he was doing had, at the very least, the appearance of impropriety.

All he ever had around him were people with their hands out, and this includes his family. They seemed to treat him like their very own money machine. Parents were only too happy to drop their children off at Neverland, and even happier to accept money for the privilege. Are we to believe that they pimped their children out? Sure sounds like it, if the allegations were actually true.

I watched the memorial service, and thought that the people who spoke and thse who performed were there because they were his friends. They seemed sincere. The only thing that struck a rather jarring note with me was the sight of that casket. I admit I was very surprised to see it there. Then, maybe not. It seemed a flamboyant gesture, and he was a flamboyant man. So, maybe it was fitting. And, then, there were the heartbreaking words of his daughter.

But, enough, already. He's gone, and hopefully, at peace. His accusers will eventually fade into the mists of time, and his music will live on.

That seems appropriate.

Whoops...don't know what happened to my comment, but will start over. He WAS a cutie while young and became a handsome man until surgeries...The city of LA spent 1.4million on the police, etc. Don't know yet where he was buried.

I LOVED his music & his dance. I majored in organ & took piano lessons from 1st grade through high school so my opinion should count.
The media ruined him & I always felt sorry for him.

I think "Thriller"s success ruined him. It made him a super wealthy man with many sycophantic hanger ons who wouldn't tell him what was inappropriate. He's an example of an ego out of control, thus the tragic trajectory of his life.

Having said that, I love his music and think he will be remembered for his success more than his eccentricities. There will never be another entertainer like him, that's for sure.

I don't think he was "an ego out of control". He was about the most humble person alive. I don't know the time sequence, but after "Thriller" might have been when the media attacked him, he abandoned Neverland & everything went downhill.

A.D.D. people do inappropriate things.

Chris Rock once said something like this about Michael Jackson, I don't know if Michael Jackson is a pedophile or not but I'll bet every pervert sweating to death outside a grade school in their ice cream truck is thinking....Heck, I wish I had a Ferris Wheel in my front yard!

And yes, you were very gracious about this subject....

I was not a fan of Michael Jackson (too old, I guess) and I didn't watch any of the TV coverage. I thought it was in very poor taste and overblown. One more Michael Jackson tribute and I think I will throw my TV out of the window.

I suppose he is deserving of pity, but many children have abusive childhoods and do not become weird because of it. I'm sorry, but I do not feel much compassion for Michael.

One of the court cases for pedophilia was settled out of court for millions and another family was bought off. Doesn't that cast a small hint of suspicion on the charge that he was a pedophile?

Even if Michael never touched those children there is something very wrong about sleeping with them. And when he held his baby over that balcony that did it for me. I guess I am on the accusers side on this one.

I think this was a very well done post Betty.
I was never a fan though I did love the theme from Free Willie "Will you be there"
He did set the music world (minus me) on fire so the appeal and talent were there in gigantic doses.
I do wonder how history will treat him.

Michael lived in a world few do and it is not a nice one. he was surrounded with greedy people and good people. he was strange but so is his family. he was a musical genius. I hated the fact that his death became a circus but his life was one so what can we expect. The media picked on him without mercy or compassion, makes me wonder who is going to be their next victim since he is gone. May he rest in peace

Well written - I think this is the closest to a political blog I have been on.
Hmmm...I don't think I will comment on Jackson today. I did plenty of that on my post "Molestation...an Unanswered Evil"
All I can say is the truth can be seen if one wants to see it.

the music and entertainment was brilliant but the child that grew up became a very troubled man.

margarethall: We may never know where he is really buried.

bikehikebabe: Seems everyone around him had a hand in ruining him. Sad.

4th sister: Chris Rock is funny.

Darlene: I don't know if he was a pedophile, either. But, I liked his music.

Arkansas Patti: I think history will treat him a lot better than he has been treated while he was alive.

tincanman and kenju: Thanks.

Grayquill: Thanks for the comment. I'm enjoying your blog.

Queen Size Funny Bone: He seemed to melt down (not talking about his nose) right in front of our eyes.

I've been thinking about doing a post on MJ and just couldn't find the words. You said it best.

His life turned into a tragedy not only by his own hands but by the hands of many others. I hope the boy/man is at peace now. And enough is enough. All the speculation in the world isn't going to provide answers to the questions that remain.

May he rest in peace.

I was not a fan of Michael Jackson. I enjoyed his music when he was a child and even later before the weird stage.

His parents abused him..especially his father. He once said their father stood over them with a belt and if they missed a dance step...they got it.

I don't know whether he was a pedophile or not and yes, the media crucified him...that's for sure. That's a tragedy There ought to be a law against the paparazzi.
