Appalled, With Two "Ps"

I have been trying to find the words to express my disgust and outrage at Ms Nadya Suleman, the young woman who gave birth to octuplets recently. I have the same feelings for the doctors who agreed to do the in vitro procedure that produced the eight children.

From the interviews she has done, it is obvious that she has no intention of working for a living. She says she plans to get a graduate degree, but not that she actually plans to use it. She just wants to stay home and play with the kids.

To that end, she now has a web site, where she wants people to donate money and supplies. There is also a place where we can send our comments and good wishes. Optimistic, isn't she? Opportunistic, more closely describes her.

Until I heard about her, I didn't think I could possibly be more appalled tha I am at the Duggar family, but she almost makes them seem normal. Almost.

And, before long, she'll have her own television series because we just love a good freak show. What a country.

One thing is for sure. She really knows how to work the system, big time. If she gets what she wants, she'll probably finish off California's financial system, which is already in big trouble.

From what I can gather, from reading several articles, the California taxpayers are in for a rough time, and probably the rest of us are, too. She already draws something like $490.00 per month in food stamps, and has Social Security disability for 3 of her original 6 children. She hasn't disclosed the amount of disability she receives for them, but by California law, a low-income family can receive from $700 per child X 3= $2,379. She herself has received disability payments totaling more than $165,000 for an on-the-job back injury. These payments were discontinued last year.

The hospital where the premature babies will probably spend 7-12 weeks has requested reimbursement from Medi-Cal. In 2006, the average cost for a premature birth's hospital stay came to $164,273 X 8 = $1.3 Million.

L.A. Times columnist Tim Rutten said, "raising 14 children takes not simply a village, but the combined resources of the county, state and federal governments."

The cosmetic surgery to make her look like Angelina Jolie couldn't have been covered by her insurance company, assuming she has insurance for, at least, herself. Since she has no visible means of support, where did she get the money for a procedure that obviously fell short of its goal?

And, as for the doctors who did the in vitro procedure? Well, all I can say is it was a sad day for medical ethics when they agreed to do it, knowing that she alread had six children under the age of 7 years. If the decision were up to me, I'd take their medical licenses away, at the very least.

OK, I'm going to have to take several Tylenols and lie down for a while. Maybe an extra Paxil will help, too. It's not good for a woman my age to get so worked up.

It's a world gone mad.

Stay tuned.

I am beyond appalled -- I think this woman should be locked up. She is a thief. And she will teach her children to play the system as well.

Furthermore, the state of California is as crazy as she is for allowing this to happen. In Ohio there's a limit to how much a family can receive for assistance and it isn't even close to what she's getting.

Betty, I said the very same things as you did, especially that the doctors ought to have their licenses revoked. She can be stupid for all I care, but they ought to have had more sense!!

She really is one sick puppy all right. I have not heard one positive comment about her from anyone. God help the kids, that poor grandmother who will be raising all those kids, and the all ready worn out tax payers. Hope they sew her shut and file criminal charges against the (doctors?) I'll join you in a Tylenol.

It is beyond disgust. I really hate the publicity she is getting because some caring people will donate thinking they are helping the babies. Too bad they can't all be taken away from her. She is certifiable.

As a California taxpayer, I can only say "amen" to everything you've said. This woman obviously has deep psychological problems and I blame the IVF doctor for not refusing this patient's request and suggesting she seek counseling. Too bad the feds and state can't require reimbursement from the doctor for the cost of supporting these children in the years to come.

This woman is out to lunch, I feel sorry for the kids and I think the doctor should cough up the money for everything. He knew better and I agree with Joan, the doctor should have told her to seek counseling. Makes you wonder if there is more to this story then they are telling.

I am beyond disgusted...this woman is a disgrace. And she continues to expect people to pay for these poor helpless children. She's an idiot, but those doctors are idiots beyond belief. How dare she even show her cosmetic surgically enhanced face. How stupid does she think we are? I guess pretty stupid....so far she's worked the system pretty well. I honestly could toss my cookies every time I hear her name. She needs some serious help...albeit might be a little too late.

You're not the only one outraged! The more I learn about this woman, the more I dislike her. There are so many things wrong about this, I don't know where to begin.

If one can't afford to have children, why have so many? Especially when in vitro fertilization costs thousands of dollars and she already has 6.

She doesn't want to marry the man who donated his genetics for the conception of all 14 children.

She's living at home, burdening her mother with having to help take care of so many grandchildren

Her father's in Iraq to make enough money to sustain them.

She has a history of depression and thinks having children will cure her depression.

She plans to get her Master's degree and go back to school later this year! Um...you have 14 children to take care. If you wanted to go to school, you should've have had so many children.

Setting up a website begging people for money! I hope she doesn't get a cent.

She wishes that she could look like Angelina Jolie.

I suspect that she only did this to get fame and the money that was supposed to follow. I think we should bring back the scarlet letter and shaming. She should be shamed out of the community. Her children should be put up for adoption.

She needs to go to a psyche ward!

I too was appaled at this stubid woman, how can she care for 14 children, the answer is she can't and I think she may be insane.
I think they should find the FATHER of these poor babies and make him support them. I bet that would stop him from shoting his wad in a cup.
I was appaled to realize I hadn't read your blog for awhile and started looking for you in my list and you were GONE! how I don't know but I found you and have read your post with a grin. you alway enterain me.

Totally agree, she is nuts, and the docs who went along with the IVF are a disgrace to the medical profession!

There are just so many things wrong with the whole situation!

I caught a few minutes of her on Dateline last week, and just couldn't even watch it all.

ALL 14 of those kids deserve better lives, and should be removed from her.

No donations will be going to her website from me, but as a California taxpayer, I know I will be donating plenty. She is delusional. Recently, the church that she said was going to help by providing volunteers has stated that was false. They didn't know Suleman and she was not a part of their group. CRAZY!

Kay: If there isn't a limit in California, I'll bet there soon will be.

Dogwalkmusings: Go figure.

kenju: I keep wondering how they got paid.

Patti: Well, Grandpa has already bugged out. He's gone back to Iraq to try to make a living, and it'll be interesting to see if Grandma hangs on.

Darlene: From the news this morning, apparently she hasn't been getting donations. Her timing was pretty bad, after all, with people in such dire straits in their own lives.

Joan and Looking to the Stars: I think those doctors ought to have to pony up, too.

Cazzie: And she is one of the insanest of us all.

Joy: The taxpayers would probably have to pay her psychiatrist, too.

Sansego: If she thinks she has been depressed in the past, think how depressed she will be when her little plan to rake in donations doesn't work as well as she hoped.

Oh, Patsy, LOL: Let's do track down that fertile father and see if he'll pay child support.

Trish: I agree, she shouldn't raise those children. She's irresponsible, at the very least.

Maria: I think she will be disappointed, and is probably stunned at the amound of disgust she has gotten from the media, etc.

Betty,

I understand that Suleman is getting death threats now.

I have an idea! Maybe to be perfectly safe she can rent a room in Dick Cheyney's old undisclosed location.

She sickens me. I wish they'd take her children away. She's obviously not capable of caring for them, financially or mentally. Maybe the REAL Angelina would like to adopt them? We all know how sane SHE is. *Eye roll*

Marmite Toasty: She claims she loves children. She can't possibly give her children the kind of one-on-one care that they deserve.

Nancy: Good idea. And, maybe Cheney will babysit for her now and then.

Tink: I think they need to be taken away, too. Imagine what a burden that would be on society, though.
