Didn't You Just Know It?

In the face of our country's meltdown, the media is constantly squawking, "Obama must do something!" "Why isn't Obama doing anything?" One pundit suggested that Obama should go to Washington and start implementing his plans now, rather than wait until January 20.

What? Obama should pull a bloodless coup? That's what it would amount to. At the very least, it would amount to a "shadow presidency". Those mindless idiots ought to calm down and stop running around in circles, exclaiming, "The sky is falling!" and start demanding that the current President come out of early retirement and DO SOMETHING, as if there is actually anything he can do at this point.

And, congress? Well, the Democrats may be in the majority, now, but there are still enough Republicans in there, until January, to stall or block anything the Democrats might want to push through. So, nothing can actually change until the transition is accomplished.

Also, the media can stop trying to rush Obama into naming his cabinet. He'll do it when he's good and ready. After all, naming people he wants to nominate doesn't mean they will actually BE in his cabinet until they are confirmed. I repeat, nothing can be done until after January 20.

And, Chris Matthews can stop braying, "I thought Obama promised change. All I'm seeing are the same old faces I saw in the Clinton Administration." By this, he means Hillary, no doubt, and the fact that Matthews doesn't like her is reason enough for me to hope that she does become Secretary of State. And, it really tickled me when Obama chose Rahm Emanuel as his Chief of Staff. That sent the pundits into orbit, didn't it? Did they really thing Obama was going to bring in a bunch of completely untested strangers to fill the important posts? "Change" means many things. In one scenario, it can mean simply the changeover from Republican rule to Democratic rule.

As for the bailout, well, as usual, they have managed to shell out the money to the very people who have caused the catastrophe in the first place, and they are either hoarding it, or pocketing it in the form of big bonuses for the guys at the top. What else could we expect from Henry Paulson, who is a part of the same crowd? You know he's going to try to protect his banking buddies. Putting him in charge of the bailout would be like putting me in charge of a plate of donuts, to protect it until the meeting starts. Too tempting.

The Democrats are trying to see that what Paulson has managed to do won't happen with the Big Three auto makers. The heads of those companies should be held accountable and should give some guarantees about what they would do with the $25 Billion "bridge loan". They have to prove that they have plans in place to change the way they do business.

And, isn't it funny the way they always fall back on the same old reasons for needing the bailout money. "We just want to protect jobs for our workers." These are the same workers that they never gave a thought to when times were good.

OK.
You're going to get a nice break from my incessant ranting next week. I'm going to visit my daughter and son-in-law and grandpuppy for Thanksgiving. We're leaving for Omaha, NE, tomorrow, so I won't be blogging again until after Dec. 1. I trust you'll bear up.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

We will miss you!

How can anyone think that Obama can do anything concrete until after the 20th of January?

Bearing up is not something I do very well, but I'll try. At least you left us with an excellent post to mull over. I agree with you and I have stopped listening to talking heads.

Delurking for a second to tell you how much I have enjoyed your perspective on American politics. They're terribly confusing from overseas, and your commentary helps!

Have a great break.

Frankly, I am sick and tired of these news commentators and loved this post because the points you make are exactly the same as the ones I would make.

Have a great time with family and I am looking forward to your December posts.
