Can I Call You Joe?

Photobucket Look closely. Not that it's all that important, but, where is her wedding ring? But, I digress.

Sneaky Sarah. Somewhere in her script was the quip, "There you go again, Joe..." a la Ronald Reagan. But, no one can accuse her of being condescending or too familiar, when she got his permission to call him Joe. Too bad the ploy didn't go over the way she thought it would. Gentleman Joe kept his cool throughout the debate and unfailingly referred to her as "Governor Palin".

It's a sad day, indeed, when a person can claim victory in a debate where all she did was stay upright, remember her lines and avoid appearing brainlocked.

When is the last time you heard a candidate inform the moderator and her opponent that she wouldn't answer the questions asked if she didn't want to. One wonders, would Jim Lehrer have let her get away with that? Or, would he followed her home, if necessary, asking the question over and over until he got an answer?

For some reason, Gov. Palin seems to think the framers of our Constitution left some wiggle room for the future expansion of the powers of the Vice President. Actually, it seems pretty cut-and-dried to me. The Vice President has one duty in his job description. Preside over the Senate in order to cast a vote if it is necessary to break a tie. Only if the President dies or can't carry out his duties would the duties of the V.P. expand, and at that time, he would have been sworn in as President. Watch your back, John.

Wouldn't you have loved to see John McCain's face when he received the e-mail that Sarah "fired off" scolding him for pulling his campaign out of Michigan? Could she possibly have been questioning the old maverick's judgment? And, why did she have to find out about the pull-out by reading the papers? Is she that unimportant to John McCain? Watch your back, Sarah.

And, what, exactly, was the purpose of all that giggling and winking and aw-shucks folksy talk? Is that the way she thinks she can relate to "her" voters? That, and wearing a flag pin that is three times the size of her opponent's? Is that how she got elected in Alaska? By sounding like she just fell off a potato truck?

Shudder. I'm glad that debate is over. Now, Sarah can sink back into oblivion, giving us only the occasional glimpse of her for the next month, since she has said she won't be appearing on Meet the Press, etc.

By the way, Biden won.

Actually no, she didn't do those things when running in Alaska. If you go back and look at her debates and speeches in Alaska, she sounded very competent and serious. This is why all that winking and stuff bothered me so much. She didn't seem serious. It was all very condescending to the voters.

But, maybe that's just me. Maybe I'm just too cynical. ;-)

I have nothing to say about Biden though. Well, I do have a lot to say about Biden and a lot of it isn't good.

I thought that at any moment, she might break into a song and dance. About Biden? Well, nobody's perfect. lol

I thought if I heard one more "by golly" or you betcha" I'd scream.

I saw something on 60 minutes last week that the average person can only name 2 or 3 vice presidents from history. Whereas they could name the vast majority of the presidents.

I think the point is, the vice president isn't all that powerful - unless of course the president dies.

My sincere hope is that McCain not only loses this election, but he loses it embarrassingly so.

At some point, we the electorate, must send politicians the signal that we take the presidency/vice presidency seriously, even if they don't.

I hope this country has learned its lesson from the Bush years, when unfortunately too many people were sucked in by Bush's faux cowboy persona.

As I have already cast my vote, I feel that I am excused from having to endure the rest of the show. ;-)

Your post made me laugh because it is so right on. Speaking of flag pins, where is John's or does he not have to wear one because, let's hear it now, he was a prisoner of war!

kenju: Listening to her speak makes me want to jam an ice pick into my ear.

karen: Ordinarily, I'd agree that the V.P. isn't all that important, but, at McCain's age, I really would want to be sure his running mate could handle the office, and I'm not at all persuaded that Sarah Palin could fill those shoes.

gyma: I wouldn't count on us having learned a lesson from the Bush presidency, but hope springs eternal.

peggy: No fair! You should suffer with the rest of us. It's the patriotic thing to do.lol

dogwalkmusings: He never seems to wear one. Go figure.

Hi Betty,

thanks for commenting on my blog. Here in England we are watching the US election race with more interest than we normally would, probably because our own government has outstayed its welcome and we are getting ready for the change.
I didn't watch the debate but, based on what I have seen I must admit to liking Sarah Palin.
I read that Palin won the debate but then again it depends on which papers one reads...

james: Welcome to my blog. Yes, I have noticed that the papers in other countries often have different takes on our candidates, etc. Maybe things are just clearer from a distance, and more unbiased. That is not to say I think you're right about Sarah Palin. LOL. You might have a different opinion of her up close and personal. All that smirking, winking and Fargo accent can get on your last nerve in a hurry.

dianne: Thank you! Jay read your blog before I did and told me I had won. I've already e-mailed you.

The one word I use to describe Sarah Palin is 'superficial.' She is so far from being qualified that it is terrifying to think she might actually become a heartbeat away from being president.

Her comments on her role as a Vice President are not only wrong, they are frightening. We have already had one stealthy VEEP and we should never have another.

When I was teaching, I always said, "I don't know, can you?" I was big on saying "may I". Thanks for all your good posts.

I have to agree Sarah Palen made me just shudder when she talked with all that folksy speech. Who does she think she's kidding?

Betty said...

darlene: I have read that Sarah Palin's husband (first Dude) has a role as "shadow governor". If he becomes the "shadow Vice-President" that will put him one heartbeat and one pillow away from the Presidency. Think about that, if you can stand it.

winnie: I'm trying to stop ending sentences with prepositions, but sometimes it sounds so stilted to do it the right way, i.e. "Dangling prepositions are things up with which I will not put." Thanks for visiting. Come back any time.

margie: I love it when Tina Fey "out-Palin's" her on SNL. And, uses Sarah's own words to do it.

Hi Betty, just stopping by from Dianne's blog to say congrats on the award.

This post is great.

I would be so very disappointed to have McC for the next 4 years. I shut the t.v. off now when the current nightmare Pres is speaking, well, not that he says much anyway. But I don't think I could take any more sneering and bullying. And now the winking. Wow.

The more I see of Gov. Palin, the more I think she is a joke, but then what does an Englishman know about the American voter ?
Blimey ! Now she is accusing Obama of consorting with terrorists !

As soon as I heard her comment "There you go again, say it ain't so Joe" (bad attempt at a Reaganism) I realized that the "civility" of asking if she could call him Joe at the outset was merely a ploy to set up this lame zinger. I found myself disappointed that it wasn't pointed out sooner. How stupid do her handlers think we are? If they see her as a person of above average intelligence I think we should all take that as an insult!
