I Hate August

It's hot. It's humid. It's boring. It's August. The only good thing I can think of about August is that it's the month when school starts. It doesn't feel as good as it used to, since my kids are grown, but I still get a little thrill when I see the "Back to School" ads.

There's nothing on TV. That is, there is more of nothing than there is the rest of the year. All the talk shows are on vacation, and are showing reruns. Note to talk show executives: Those shows weren't all that interesting the first time around. Why would I want to watch them again?

Congress is on vacation. This means that the Washington media who still have to show up every day are resentful, so they try even harder to stir things up and make things that really aren't news seem like they're important. Like the kerfuffle about the Mosque in New York City. ( Is that the correct way to spell "kerfuffle"? I thought it was "kerfluffle." Oh, never mind.)

Honestly, if the people in New York and various other areas of America are still so upset about 9/11, why haven't they done anything about cleaning up "Ground Zero" and built a proper memorial. It's been 9 years. What are they waiting for?

Dr. Laura Schlessinger has left her radio talk show and is going in search of her First Amendment rights. She hasn't yet figured out that although she has freedom of speech, there are consequences, and she wants to take away other peoples' rights to free speech if they criticize her. Poor thing. I guess we could count this as a good thing for this particular August.

Another good thing, all of the combat troops have left Iraq, at last. Something else President Obama promised to do and he has done it. There are still 50,000 non-combat troops left to continue with training. They are scheduled to leave in 2011.

And, that's about it. Nothing more to say. I'm hot, tired and cranky, but there's no point in taking it out on you.

Stay tuned.
