Bottom of the Barrel

Proof that the networks, cable and otherwise are trying to reach the lowest common denominator of viewers.

Just scroll through the so-called reality shows and think about the class of people they are trying to reach.  Why?  Because it's cheaper than trying to air shows with writers who are innovative and imaginative, and expect to be paid well for their talents.

I am not offended by the likes of the old pedophile with his brain scrambled by decades of drug use, and the disgusting Honey Boo-Boo and her whole disgusting family, to name just two.  Actually, I think they are being exploited for the worst possible reasons. And, I don't care what they think. Free speech is well and good, but there are always consequences, so when you spout off on the air, you make your own bed. Ask Paula Deen.

I am disgusted by the lowered expectations of the viewers.  Watching all the semi-literate, ignorant people who we find in all areas of television, shows how we have been dumbed down in America. There was a time when people who didn't have a grasp of grammar and pronunciation or a sense of history, or how the government is supposed to work couldn't expect to be taken seriously in a job interview or be elected to office or be hired in the private sector, for that matter.

And, it spills over into our politics. Look who we are electing to high office.  People who don't have even a basic understanding of the Constitution. You don't have to go much further than the state of Texas to see what I mean, and Oklahoma, Arkansas and the rest of the southern states are right down there with Texas.

I used to think people knew better, and they just didn't care, as long as their political agendas were satisfied. But, now, I'm not sure at all.

Boy, do we need to stop watching television! Either that or get together and demand that they raise the level of their programming.

Stay tuned.

The television offerings are an embarrassment these days. I assume people must watch, but I cannot fathom why.

You are absolutely right. Those who are ignorant of the Constitution, but also of basic principles of science, mathematics, history and geography are not only tolerated, but celebrated. It is a sad state for our country, without a doubt.

I have really not seen any of those shows and can't understand the huge draw unless it is like the freak shows at the circus. That these shows flourish concerns me.

I have nothing to add except that when you and I think alike or differ with reason it shows our generation can still show the way - getting others to listen is the problem!
