Cynicism Run Amok

Here is the "before" and "after of John McCain's choice for Vice-President.

The first one is Sarah Palin as beauty contestant, and the second one is Sarah Palin, good Republican woman.

That sound you heard early Friday morning was the collective dropping of Republican jaws when John McCain announced that his choice for Vice-President was Sarah Palin. He even had to glance at his cheat sheet to remind himself of her name.

When you consider how many very worthy Republican women were available to him, i.e.: Condi Rice, Kay Baily Hutchinson, it passeth understanding how he rationalized his decision to choose someone with so little to bring to the ticket.

If he wanted to chase away the women who backed Hillary, and threatened to bolt and vote for him, he couldn't have done a better job of it. Her political philosophy couldn't be farther from theirs. She's pro-life, pro-guns, pro-NRA, and anti-gays. Of course, he has solidified his evangelical base, all the right wing wackos, but at what cost? There were plenty of people in his party who are very unhappy with John McCain being the candidate, but were willing to be good soldiers, so to speak, and support him. But now? That will remain to be seen.

This choice just screams volumes about McCain's opinion of women in general, too. He's saying, in effect, you girls are just so dumb and empty-headed that you will accept anyone I choose. So, get back in the kitchen and shut up.

Much as I hate to admit to one or two tiny faults, I'm going swim over to the shallow end of the polical pool and own up to one failing by telling you my first impression of Ms Palin. With that hairdo and those dorky glasses, I thought she looked like one of those "cult" members from Texas, only better dressed. There, I feel better, now that you know I'm human. Then, I found the picture of her with her short shorts and deep cleavage and wondered, "Will the real Sarah Palin please stand up?"

I also wonder how Cindy McCain feels about her hubby's choice.

This could get interesting.

I'll bet she isn't very happy about that choice.

McCain has cut his own throat. No way would I, as a Hillary supporter, vote for such a woman.

I am sooooo counting on this to come back and bite McCain in the butt!!

I saw some footage of Plain being interviewed back in July. They asked her if she was interested in being VP. She giggled (yes! giggled) and as her head bounced up and down like a demented Barbie she said "I wish someone would tell me what exactly it is that the VP does every day"

Priceless!

Jon Stewart calls her McCain's third wife.

OMG! My husband's first reaction was ditch the hairdo!

My head has not stopped shaking since McCain's announcement. I cannot make any sense of it. The right wing family values people are gushing over her. Is it a family value to leave a special needs infant and hit the campaign trail? Who's caring for this child that could notice changes as well as a mother? What does she want to be, beauty queen, fisherman, mother or governor?

I think (and hope) that he has just handed the election to Obama.

This Australian is shaking her head too! And that was before I saw the Beauty Pageant shot!!! Am I right in thinking that McCain has brought in Palin in the hopes of attracting the peeved Hillary supporters??? Let's hope the women supporters aren't that easily led! You've got a HUGE population!!! Yet it seems choices are limited!

Just when you think you've heard and seen it all....

McCain has shot himself in the foot on this one. It only confirms further what I already felt about him.

It should be SO obvious as to who our next president has be....we need Barack Obama.

I love Sarah Palin!

She is the "Trailer Park Barbie" that at long last brings to the White House an honest and genuine reflection of the American people.

I guess Barack Obama would be an adequate president...

As long as all he ever has to do is activate his two-million name email list to solve things.

margie: I don't think many other Hillary supporters would vote for Sarah, either.

dianne: "McCain's third wife" - funny. Did you see how he twisted his wedding ring when he introduced her?

dogwalkmusings: I agree with your husband.

linda hillin: It'll be interesting to watch all the good old boys swallowing hard and lining up for her.

kenju: We can only hope.

rinkly rimes: This is a very unusual year for both parties. But, I think McCain lost the Hillary voters with this pick.

joy: Amen.

Dirk: "An honest and genuine reflection of the American people." Oh, I hope not. But, I'm afraid you're right.

Condi Rice would have been a great choice. They should have called you and got a smart woman's advice.
