We'll Always Have Paris

While the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs was losing his job yesterday, throwing Washington into a tailspin, the media could only spare a brief announcement because they had a far more interesting story unfolding. Paris Hilton was ordered to come back to court.

Things just get stranger and stranger out in La-La Land, don't they? First, some idiot judge sentences Paris to 2 1-2 years in jail for something that isn't even a felony. He won't hear of any "house arrest" , either. I've seen times when real felons didn't serve that long in jail. But, that's ok. Then, he said she only had to spend 23 days in jail. Much more manageable - at least that's what I thought.

Then, the sheriff springs her after 2 nights, citing overcrowding and a mysterious health problem. So, still ok. I don't care one way or the other - she can stay in, she can get out - move along.

So, here's what really bothers me. The judge who sentenced her goes ballistic and demands that she come back to court. When her lawyer says she wants to phone it in, he send the cops to cuff her and haul her in. Which they do. This time, she's a mess, sobbing and crying. And, the judge tells her that she is going to do the full 45 days.

See, what he was doing was punishing her for something the sheriff did. What should she have done when the sheriff opened the cell door and let her out? Should she have said, "Sheriff, don't you think you should check with the judge? He sounded pretty determined to make me stay here." Of course not. She went home and called her hair dresser.

Now, we'll have to watch day after day until the judge's ruling is appealed and she is released again. Something tells me this little story isn't going to have a happy ending.

What is with the judges in California?

The sheriff was trying to get in to the VIP section of The Viper Room. That judge has messed it up for him.

I agree that the judge's sentence seemed to be harsher than what regular people get. Maybe he was trying to make an example out of her. I also agree that he's NOW punishing her for the Sheriff's actions. But even though the Sheriff has the authority to release prisoners due to overcrowding, he must have known the reaction it would provoke in this high profile case. The judge threw her back in the slammer with the full sentence because he wanted to save face, IMO.

By the way, I've tried submitting this comment a few times, so if it appears more than once, that's why.

What I wonder every time she's on the news, is what has she done to be newsworthy?

Maybe Paris should move to Paris out of jurisdiction?

I read about this in this morning's paper and it all seems like a great big mess. What is to be gained by any of this, anyway? I agree. This does not have the makings of a happy ending.

Well, I for one am glad somebody out there said, "hell no, she's a spoiled brat, she has to finish what she started!" and MADE her come back. Probably no one has ever made that girl do anything she didn't want to do her whole life.
She's having psychological problems? I would imagine just about any sane woman who has to go to jail for any reason does. Too bad, so sad.
Keep her butt in jail.

I just think it's odd that the judge wants her in for 45 days now - if he said 23 earlier, he should stick with it. No sense in moving it back up.

I think Paris should have to spend two years with the Peace Corps in Darfur. And Lindsay Lohan should do the same.

If we did what she did then I bet we would be thrown in jail and the key thrown away too!

Yes, it was the sheriff who let her out, but I think he had a little encouragement. I don't believe he decided that on his own that the poor little girl was too sick to serve her time.

And although I agree that the sentence was too long, I agree that she should have been sent back to jail. After a couple of nights she says, "I've learned my lesson and hope others" blah blah blah. I wonder how long that statement had been prepared.

But I do feel sorry for her, too.

The bigger issue of justice has been missed, I think, by the commentators. I appreciate you raising it, Betty.

The British press has devoted pages and pages to this ridiculous nonsense, but I did like the headline in the UK's 'Sun' newspaper that Paris had cried out for her "Mum!" (Mom) has she was taken away to jail.

I think that judge decided it was time for someone to finally teach on of those spoiled rich kids a lesson...and nobody was going to mess with it!

Poor little rich girl...

Yeah - whatever to Paris Hilton - I'm as guilty as everyone else for making her the subject of my blog, but I'm definitely ready to move on. Maybe Lindsey Lohan will do something outrageous in rehab for us to talk about. he he

Actually, judges usually give a longish sentence and then reduce it. That leaves the rest of the sentence as probation and if she is caught again they just whip a few more days in jail on her and don't have to try her again, because it is a violation of parole. But, punishing her for what the sheriff did makes no sense to me.
